Default Name Erased After Certain time

I think after a certain amount of time like after 2-4 months, if you haven't signed on to that character on your account the name should be erased and when you get back on you can change the name or put back the name that was on that character back on there if it's still around. The reason why I bring this up there's some names that people would hope to have as there own, but a lot of people have quit and have kept those names and no one will ever have them, because those players willl never be on again. I know some people that would like to buy those names for in game money but the players are never on or have quit so they never get opportunity to try and get them. I'm not in any way saying to delete the character just the name so someone has the opportunity to get them as there own.

this would also promote playing, as u would have to log in every couple of months...CoH/CoV already does this, and they dont seem to have a problem with it...and their owned by NCSoft too.....

Would you want someone stealing your legal name if you went into a coma, then the government would tell you to pick a new name for yourself?

If someone stole your name, just cuss them out. That's what I did and I got my name back.

You also pay to play CoH/CoV, Guildwars is free and they specifically say you can pick it up and put it down whenever you want, for as long as you want, meaning no deleting characters due to long amount of time between logins.

/notsigned for erasing your name...however....

Character names stay attached to an account even if characters are deleted.

If you add someone with a specific character name, and later on they delete that name....you still see that name with the () to show the current character name. Which means that name is NEVER disassociated with the account, no matter how long ago you may have deleted that character.

Wtf are you talking about?? this is not real life...and even fi a guildwars player fell into a coma, who would want to steal someone specific name...Im sure you've dreamed of this happening to you(you stealing) with like....kobe bryant...or someother guy and dreamt that you stole his name...then later on cuss edkobe(or whoever out) [[By the way this is makign about as much sense as he did so Im going to stop]]

Only reason I can think is so they can pose as an imposter if say the person with the original name had a reputation for being a really good player

Either that or they cant come up with something original and unique for themselves.

xxxx Legolas or Legolas xxxx anyone? or even Darth xxxx

Are you sure they stay attached and can't be used again? I had always presumed that the name just stays like that on your Friend's list because that is how it was first recorded onto your Friend's list and that that had no bearing on whether that name was still attached to anything or existant or not, but I could be wrong about that.

If you are right about that point, then how come people used to complain about having their name stolen by another player shortly after they deleted a character, seeing as that would not be possible under this system?

Yea but that doesnt mean the character exists hence the (name), the one you first type in is the one you recognise their account by on your friends list.

It lasts an hour... test this kind of stuff first.

I know that character names are still associated with players if you add them to your 'friends' list. But, I thought I read somewhere that when you delete a character the name is reserved; which lasts for something like 30 minutes or an hour and then if you don't use it again it'll be open for others to use.

As for the suggestion, just because someone quits the game, or leaves for a certain amount of time, doesn't mean that they should have to give up their character name just because someone else wants to use it. They bought the game and therefore have the 'right' to reserve the names that for the characters that they've created. Regardless of whether or not they intend to use it again.

As for there being other people who want a particular name, how will this solve the problem? It'll only satisfy one person out of the 'many' who want a popular name. Besides how many times do people type in a name and it tells them it already exists; so in response they write down the name on their friends list just to see if that person is still active? I've yet to encounter someone who's gone so far as to do this and it's more than likely that you just think of a new name and go on with your life.

no - the point of guild wars is you can drop it if you want to, and come back to it later. erasing your name would discourage that, not incourage.

Stupid idea. No other game does this. They just delete your character. Which is fine. Making you change your name isn't.

On topic : /notsigned, one of the reason above, stealing the rep of a good player.

Off topic (i think) to quoted poster: not everyone wants an original or unique name, I myself stick to a good ol chaos xxxx, but thats because i use that name for any game i play.

Yeah but theres got to be more than Star Wars or Lord Of The Rings when it comes to naming a character looking at the amount of people who use names related to it, especially Warriors named Legolas who obviously dont know Legolas is actually an Archer/Ranger type character.

/worst idea ever

The developer's tout the fact that with no monthly fee you can set the game aside for as long as you want, come back and everything will be waiting for you.

I surely wouldn't want someone stealing "The Real Legolas" from my account..hahaha
